History
It all started in Istanbul, Turkey with a band called LSD (lately the band changed its name to “Headbangers”) at the end of 80’s... They were playing melodic 77’style punk rock at that time, it’s so sad that this band couldn’t make a tape to bring all their songs together... Then the Spinners came, another melodic punk rock band which was composed of female punk rockers. They got great attention from the worldwide DIY press when their demo “Lalala” was out.... These two bands and couple of others ( SAD, Necrosis and Radical Noise ) are included in a Turkish hc/punk compilation 7” released from a French DIY label Tian An Men Records (T************ Antipodes Souterrains, 29 me de Scultz 67100 Strasbourg, France).

Morbid Youth / Turmoil
In 90’s new and more political generation was coming out with a band called Moribund Youth... M.Youth was the first Turkish hardcore/punk band actively released tapes - arranged gigs, they’ve started the whole Turkish hc/punk scene. Their first demotape was close to DRI/MOD type of crossover stuff, but they changed their style into Doom / Citizens Arrest /Infest influenced 80’s style DIY hardcore/punk in thie second demo “Türk Hardcore” which was released in ’92... This demo triggered the scene and new bands started to emerge like Necrosis, SAD, Radical Noise, Dispute, Violent Pop and Regorge... At the end of 92, the band has changed it’s name to Turmoil, and released split 7”s with Accoustic Grinder ( Belgian crust/punk) and Regeneration ( Mexican punk)..... After having gigs with bands like Zen, Violent Pop, Radical Noise, Ask It Why; they split up in February’94..... With their unique sound and a starter position in Turkish hardcore/punk scene, Turmoil is the most important band while talking about Turkish hardcore/punk scene.. They’ve missed the chances to make split LP’s with legends like DOOM and AGATHOCLES because of some misunderstandings and financial problems.... For more info and a broader history check their website here.

Violent Pop / Regorge / Crunch
Violent Pop, a noisy hardcore band from the beginning of 90’s, they were rehearsing with members of Turmoil in a band called Regorge, and in 93, two members of this band joined to Turmoil.... After the split of Turmoil, these members formed Crunch, another noisy ‘84 hardcore/punk style band which was heavily influenced by Born Against.. They’ve released Turkey’s first compilation tape under their distro (consists of two Violent Pop songs).... In 1997, the one and only Crunch album : “The Love Album” was out from independent Turkish label KOD Music.... From the recording quality to it’s vocals, “Love Album” is a good example of ’84 style hardcore/punk.. Crunch is lyrically concentrated on ethical rights of minorities in Turkey and shooting the worlwide capitalism ... The band still continues to play gigs, they’ve played with punk rock legends New Model Army and a few months ago they’ve played with European punk bands OVO and NNY ....... For more information on Crunch, click here.

Necrosis
Necrosis was a thrash-core band in the beginning... After a demo released the band have changed their style into melodic punk with strong political lyrics and released their second demo tape... Then they’ve released a split 7” with Radical Noise from a Czech DIY label View Beyond Records which was titled as “End Of Sustain”... The band was last known by it’s great effort on their split tape with UpToDate (Italian punk) released from: Flammable Tapes, Faisal, BLK 111, Yishun Ring Road, #02-367, Singapore 2776 .....

Radical Noise
For a lengthy biography of Radical Noise, the most important hardcore band in Turkey today, click here.

Rashit
In my opinion Rashit is the greatest Turkish punk band ever... Started to play dirty sounding punk rock ( which was titled as “punk’n’roll” by themselves ) in the middle of 90’s... After a couple of demo tapes, Rashit had a split 7” with another Turkish hc band Ask It Why from View Beyond Records titled as “Kadiköy’den Hareketler”..... Then the split tape with legendary English punk/hc outfit Active Minds came.... Their last effort was a full-length album named “Telasa Mahal Yok” released from KOD Music which can be easily counted as the best Turkish punk album ever in my opinion. Rashit’s lyricks are political and direct to the point and written in Turkish.... For more info on this band, click here.

SAD / Ask It Why
SAD ( Super Agressive Dick ) was a band composed of total DRI fans and released a demo tape called “Parental Advisory” which was one of the biggest influences of RN in the beginning... After a demo they’ve parted ways and the rest of the band formed great Ask It Why while the vocalist Emre started Radical Noise.... Ask It Why’s concert performance was great and they’ve released two split releases with Rashit ( mentioned above) and Radical Noise ( a split album from KOD Music ).... Ask It Why was a DRI influenced band but it was better in some point that their musicianship was better in my opinion.. You can contact the band’s frontman Vedat from this e-mail adress : kiyici@earthlink.netBu e-posta adresi spam korumalıdır. Lütfen JavaScriptleri etkinleştirin.

Dispute
Another great melodic hc/punk band with a female vocalist which released a great demo titled “Have A Future” in 95 and then split up. Dispute was a highly political band responding to violent Turkish government at that time and capitalist/racist movements in Turkey... Their songs was influenced by English DIY hc/punk, fast, melodic and right to the point......

Tampon / Dead Army Boots / Athena
These bands were the most funny punk bands of Turkish punk/hc scene in the middle of 90’s.... Tampon was a full-female punkrock band playing only for fun, they’ve released no tapes but had great gigs in Istanbul along with the bands above.... Athena was a ska/oi band covering classic songs in their gigs, but these days they play pop-ska and they’re a very famous commercial “boyband” in Turkey.....

IKIBOLU5BEZE / ZEN
The 2/5BZ group-project was set up in 1986. It made audio tapes, collage video films, stickers, cdr, photocopyzines, posters, and performed concerts (sometime one person , sometime seven people playing tape, sampler, anatolian saz, darbouka, electronics, drums, speech, vocals,..) From 1991 on, 2/B5Z published its products by itself. In a way, tried to create its own media and copied/distribute or sometimes trade these products under very simple circumstances.

Something's Wrong
Something’s Wrong, a hardcore/crossover band from Turkey, released an album from independent music label Hammer Music ( www.hammermuzik.com ) which was titled as “Proud Of It”.. They mix NYHC elements with oriental middle east melodies, and they were a great live band also... The band is not active for a year...

Other Bands
SERT ITHAM / PICK AXE ( A melodic punk band from the south of Turkey ) / EMPTY CAGE / GODZILLA ( The first Turkish hc band played a Sick Of It All cover on the stage “Friends Like You” in 95 ) / V.O.1 ( Voice Of Illegal, another southern Turkish punk band ) / 2/5 B7 / IT JIBS / M37's / NO NAME / T.P.G.F / X-YOUTH / / HOME WORK / KOPEK / PROF / E.T.C. / NICHT PERSONLICH NOR ARBEIT / NOVAYA EMLIYA / PUNCH ( Turkey’s answer to “Madball Mafia” ) / APATHETIC / BYSR ..........
